BC Manufacturer Builds Classrooms For Alberta’s LEED Silver Certified Schools

Design built for Alberta Infrastructure’s LEED Silver Certified schools project, these new
classrooms had to be aesthetically friendly and energy-efficient while providing energy
conservation for the stipulated 50-year life span of each classroom.

Every aspect of this unique project was engineered and scrutinized using LEED specs; ventilation, heating, lighting, insulation for R-value and noise suppression, fire protection and building materials. And it was all possible because of energy efficient, strong — Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

The SIPs used in these classrooms not only gives them superior insulation qualities, SIPs also make them structurally superior to conventional wood frame buildings. Designed and built for lasting strength, each unit is engineered to be moved 10 times in their lifespan. This transportability means these classrooms can be moved from one community to another as school populations grow or shrink with no compromise to the classroom’s structural integrity or a school district’s budget. An all around healthier, stronger building without the look, feel or long term economic downside of a portable building.

Early in 2009 Greensmart Manufacturing Ltd. was awarded the contract to manufacture more than 200 of these units.
